A Special Friday

Four years ago, on the second Friday in February, I got Flicka. What a beautiful, sweet little kid she was, staying beautiful and sweet her whole life. Unfortunately, her life was ended when she was barely 2 years old, when I put her down because she started suffering from CAE. She was my all-time favorite goat, and a lot of my passion for goats died with her. I still love goats, but that extra spark of enthusiasm, that special friend out in the barn is no longer there. I had an on going list of special does before Flicka, none of whom are here any longer for various reasons, but Flicka was that last very special doe. I love the goats I have and certainly still have my favorites, but have no little pets anymore.

This year, on the second Friday of February, another special goat came to this farm. He is Flicka's full brother, and is solid black. Now, while I don't expect him to be another Flicka, or even a special little pet, because 1.) no two animals are the same and 2.) he is going to grow up to be a nasty buck, it is nonetheless extremely special to be bringing home a genetic copy of that special goat I had. It seems to add something that I got him on the same day, 4 years after Flicka. I also just realized that he was born on February 4th(Flicka was born on the 5th) and that I emailed the breeder and told her I wanted to buy him on the 5th, Flicka's birthday.
Meet Felix! He's actually kinda sable, but is already well on his way to turning totally black.

I originally had a reservation on a doe kid, but then decided we needed a buck kid, as all of our bucks were sold for various reasons. I asked to switch to a buck kid out of a doe due the end of March, but when Flicka's full brother was born I just couldn't resist him(the fact that Mom was willing do go fifty-fifty for him helped too).
Our goats don't start kidding for another month, so he would have been all alone during that time, which is not good for goats at all. The breeder has a lot of extra buck kids this year, and gave us a companion buck kid-if this kid had been a doe, he would have been the kid I originally had a reservation on! Good thing I decided to change it anyway, as the whole litter were bucks! The breeder knew I wanted something out of these bloodlines, so she said if I decide that I want to keep him as a breeding buck, I can pay her at that time and she will register him.
His name is Ace, courtesy of Brittany. Right now, I actually think he's prettier than Felix. He's pretty noisy already though, so that's not a good sign. Felix mutters/chuckles, like Flicka, Mr. Black, and Minx did/do.

  1. Hi Kailey! You're bucklings are cute! I love how Felix is black and Ace has white "stockings".
